Hello everyone! We had our first airplane ride as a family. It went very well. Maya was so well behaved all day. We fed her a bottle just as we started down the runway. She finished it pretty quickly, as usual. She fell asleep shortly thereafter. Slept all the way (about 55 minutes) until we began the descent. Not a peep out of her. Good Job Maya! We took a van ride to our hotel and we were very relived to find the hotel so nice. Big sigh after walking into our room. (Good sigh that is) The hotel is very modern, with plenty of room and even a queen sized bed. We haven't slept in the same bed all week.
We ventured out right away to see Shamian Island. This is a small island where most adoting families stay while in Guangzhou. It is beautiful with plenty of shops, and thing to eat. There's even a Starbucks. Sheila got herself a Mocha, right away. We walked down to the White Swan Hotel where the rest of our group os staying. We chose to stay at the Victory Hotel because the rooms are much nicer, and it's about $50 less a night. The White Swan has a beautiful lobby with lots of shops inside the hotel. We are only about a 2 minute walk away. While we were out, we test drove a stroller for Maya. She loved it! Sold! Only about $20 US. Sheila is getting some much deserved relief for her back. Maya still will not let me hold her much. She definitely looks at me and will touch me, but always checks to see if Sheila is nearby. Baby Steps, Baby Steps.
After letting Maya take a 2 hour nap, we went out again with the stroller for about an hour. Success! It wasn't a fluke. We needed some food, so Sheila went in to a Thai restaurant near our hotel. Maya stayed put in the stroller with me outside. This lasted about 5 minutes before she figured out Sheila was missing. She cried a little, and let me pick her up. This stopped the crying for about 10 more minutes. Cried again, and I was able to soothe her all on my own. Once Sheila appeared from the restaurant, Maya reached for her immediately. Oh well, my magic touch was short lived. At least there's some progress. Each day we hope Maya will keep trusting me more and more. You have to remember, she was never around any men her whole life so far.
We ate our food back in the room, (It was really good) and played with Maya on the bed for a while. I decided to get out the video camera to save the moment. She was having so much fun. We all were. I've posted a short clip of her in action. It's a Quicktime video. (Hopefuly all of you can see it)
Enjoy!
We miss you,
Love Maya, Sheila, & Tim

How very cool was that! I'm glad you're so "techno". Sounds like the baby steps are working and things are going well. I wake up each day and rush to my computer to see what's new. We can't wait to see you all. Enjoy...

We loved the video clip! The kids were so excited to see it. Jake kept replaying it and he kept saying "hi, Sheila" to the computer screen. Thank goodness she likes the stroller, much needed relief for Sheila's back! Have a good time exploring in Guangzhou! Sam
Thank goodness for Starbucks! Isn't it funny how the little things make us feel at home. Love the video! Glad the mini flight went well - good practice for the last leg of the trip. Almost home! You both are amazing! Laura
